IASI Award for Excellence

"Scale Mixtures of Skew-Normal Distribution with Applications in Regression Models".
The IASI Award for excellence is aimed at identifying and recognizing new talents in the area of Statistics in the American region, to attract their attention towards the Institute, stimulate their action in favor of statistical development in the region, and facilitate the dissemination of relevant work of young statisticians.
The IASI Award will consist of a diploma in addition to an amount equivalent to US$500.00 (five hundred U.S. dollars). The winner of the Award will also have automatic membership to IASI, with annual dues covered for a two year period, inclunding subscription to the journal Estadística and IASI’s Newsletter for the same period.
Themes. Themes in any area of theory and application of Statistics will be considered, giving emphasis to original applications and to the solution of problems of wide interest for the host country and for the countries in the American region in general. Theoretical contributions without a corresponding application will only be considered in case they represent a significant advance in the knowledge of the discipline at the international scale, which will require for instance that the paper satisfy the acceptance rules of leading journals (JASA, JRSS-B, Biometrika, Annals of Statistics, etc.), in addition to present a clear illustration of how such methods are useful for relevant applications.
Eligibility. Young statisticians (up to 40 years old in the date when the award will be granted), Latinamerican and Caribean countries resident, will be accepted in the contest.
Publication and dissemination of the winning paper. The winner of the award shall present the paper during the 18o SINAPE (Simpósio Nacional de Probabilidade e Estatística); it shall be mandatory that she/he submit it for publication in the journal Estadística edited by IASI. Consequently, the paper shall not be submitted for publication in any other journal. The Award Commission may also encourage the submission of other meritorious papers participating in the contest, even if they are not winning papers.

Submission of Papers. Only papers written in Portuguese, English or Spanish will be accepted. The deadline is May 26th, 2008. There must be only one author by paper. They can be sent by e-mail in pdf or ps (postscript) format to the electronic address premioiasi@redeabe.org.br
The contest result will be reported on July, 7th, 2008.
Presentation of the winning paper. The winning paper will be presented at the 18o SINAPE, in a session previously organized by the Executive Committee of IASI. Travel expenses within Brazil and stay expenses during the event will be covered by IASI.
IMPORTANT: If the paper receives the award or if it is indicated for publiction at Estadistica, the author will have to format it following the instructions of the GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS 2008.
